The Arab Spring Revolutions

Examines mass protest movements that topple autocratic leaders in the Arab World. Studies causes, dynamics, and pattern of authoritarian breakdown and transition in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yemen and Syria. Questions include: What is driving sudden protest movements? Why now? How important is role of youths and new technologies of communication? What does religion have to do with these movements? Why have Arab republics been more vulnerable? Are Arab monarchies (Jordan, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia) really immune? One course.
