International Democratization


Focus on critical analysis of international efforts to improve governance, build democracy and increase respect for human rights through a series of methods or tools: international law, sanctions, aid, conditionality, and a vast array of activities broadly labeled democracy promotion, including election assistance and civil society development. Class requires a high level of discussion and preparation for each meeting. Emphasis on student application of reading material to a particular country. Instructor: Kelley
