William J. Burns is a career diplomat with a distinguished career of service, including as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (2021-2025), Deputy Secretary of State (2011-2014), and U.S. Ambassador to the Russian Federation (2005-2008). Burns also served as president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and is the author of The Back Channel: A Memoir of American Diplomacy and the Case for Its Renewal, published in 2019.
