Political Theory Workshop: Jeff Spinner-Halev (UNC) & Alex Kirshner (Duke)

October 1, -
Speaker(s): Jeff Spinner-Halev and Alex Kirshner
Political philosophers rarely systematically test the robustness of their arguments. They should. We outline what robustness means in the context of political philosophy, why persuasive theories of political institutions should be robust and assess two prominent, rival theories of open borders--one liberal, the other egalitarian. Leveraging the institutional developments wrought by the ongoing pandemic, we demonstrate how a robustness test can be deployed and illustrate what can be learned from doing so. Our argument has implications for the specific theories we discuss, the broader debate about open borders and political philosophy, more generally.
