Duke Professor of Political Science Pablo Beramendi has been awarded the 2025 Daniel Elazar Distinguished Federalism Scholar Award from the American Political Science Association (APSA). The Daniel Elazar Distinguished Federalism Scholar Award recognizes distinguished scholarly contributions to the study of federalism and intergovernmental relations.
Beramendi's research delves into the political economy of inequality and redistribution, with a particular emphasis on the territorial dimensions of distributive conflicts. He investigates why certain political unions engage in more redistribution than others, exploring the interplay between economic geography and political representation.
His seminal work, “The Political Geography of Inequality,” presents a theory on the origin of fiscal structures in multi-level governments, analyzing how economic geography and interregional externalities influence redistribution efforts. This book, which examines cases from the European Union, Canada, the United States, Germany and Spain, received the 2013 Best Book Award from the APSA's European Politics and Society section and an honorable mention for the 2014 Luebbert Best Book Award.
Through his extensive scholarship, Beramendi has provided insights into how federal structures manage inequality, navigate crises and evolve over time. His work exemplifies the distinguished scholarly contributions recognized by the Daniel Elazar Award.
