Political Economy

POLSCI 890-6

This one-semester seminar is focused on the “real world” of international development monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL). MEL encompasses the set of activities whereby international development organizations do research to inform future programs and to evaluate the efficacy of their interventions. This is an applied course that covers the landscape of international development organizations ("funders") as well as research organizations ("industry"). In addition to the actors involved in MEL for international development, this applied seminar covers “getting the work” (e.g., reading/understanding/responding to a solicitation for MEL activities), as well as “doing the work” (e.g., the design and implementation of selected international development MEL projects). Because the topics covered are very broad, this seminar provides a high-level overview of the international development MEL landscape, and does not focus on the details of specific evaluation methods. This seminar will be of interest to master’s students interested in careers in international development, evaluation of international development programs, and applied social science research.
Topics on Political Economy.
