Dr. Vesla Weaver is the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Sociology at Johns Hopkins University and a 2016-2017 Andrew Carnegie Fellow. Her research focuses on racial inequality in the U.S., how state policies and institutions shape political life and identity, and the effects of increasing punishment and surveillance in America on democratic inclusion. Dr. Weaver is the author of Arresting Citizenship: The Democratic Consequences of American Crime Control and Creating a New Racial Order: How Immigration, Multiracialism, Genomics, and the Young Can Remake Race in America, both published at Princeton University Press. Dr. Weaver received her Ph.D. in Government and Social Policy from Harvard.
