Critical Current Issues in North America
A survey course on current critical issues impacting North America, examined from a continental perspective. Specific areas of focus: trade, energy, immigration, the environment, continental defense, organized crime and the border. Course theme: to what extent are those challenges amenable to joint action by the three countries? Taught from the perspective of a U.S. diplomat, with emphasis on cross-cultural awareness - how do Mexicans or Canadians look at these issues? - the history of current problems, and workable policy solutions. Specific skills taught include the basics of effective memo writing and delivering compelling, succinct oral briefings. One course.
